The village has a thriving General Store with Post Office, Houghton primary school, Houghton nursery and a hairdresser’s salon. St John’s Church lies at the north end of the village; the Croft organic farm, selling organic produce and Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s Gosling Sike conservation area both lie immediately to the south.
